About the CL3000 WiFi CAN Logger

The CL3000 is an easy-to-use, low cost CAN bus data logger with a 16 GB SD card, real-time clock and WiFi.

What can you use it for? The CL3000 lets you record CAN bus data from any vehicle (cars, trucks, tractors, …) and any other CAN based asset (machinery, robotics, EV batteries, ...). This includes SAE J1939, OBD2 and CANopen applications.

To get started, simply connect the CL3000 to your CAN application (e.g. a vehicle). That's it.

The CL3000 logs CAN data to the SD card in a simple *.CSV format. The data can then be extracted via USB or WiFi.

Further, you can use our free software CANvas to configure the CL3000 and convert the raw data using *.DBC files for quick analysis.

When Do You Need the CL3000 CAN Logger?

The CL3000 is great for frequent users that want the WiFi convenience, higher data transfer speed and RTC syncing.

However, the CL3000 truly shines in vehicle fleet applications - or cases where remote monitoring is vital:

Vehicle Telematics

Need to monitor & optimize a vehicle fleet in near real-time?

If so, the CL3000 provides a simple, low cost and zero-subscription alternative to existing telematics platforms. By combining the CL3000 with a cellular hotspot, you can get a steady stream of data to your server from all your vehicles. Great for e.g. truck fleet management, prototype vehicle field testing, predictive maintenance and more. If you need GPS, you can add a GPS-to-CAN transmitter to your setup.

Warehouse Fleet Management

Need to monitor a fleet of forklifts in a warehouse?

For site managers or OEMs, the CL3000 can provide easy access to data from e.g. 50 forklifts in a warehouse - giving insights on e.g. optimizing battery management. The log files can be sent in small chunks (e.g. 1 MB), allowing for a steady stream of data in near real-time.

Further, the CL3000 can connect via any hotspot: A regular WLAN, smartphone - or a 3G / 4G WiFi hotspot.

Configuring the CL3000 CAN bus analyzer is quite simple. You can directly edit the CONFIG.INI file in e.g. Notepad - or use our free CANvas software as in our WiFi configuration guide. For basic usage, you simply specify the WiFi mode (e.g. Station Mode) and enter the hotspot SSID name & password. When using Push Mode, you just add the FTP IP address/hostname, the destination folder directory and the server user/password. For more details, see our CL3000 configuration guide.

For many use cases, the CL2000 will be sufficient.

However, the CL3000 has quickly become our most popular CAN logger for a number of reasons:

  • In terms of costs, the CL3000 is typically paid back vs the CL2000 in just a few months through pure time savings
  • For large-scale applications, using a CL2000 is simply not feasible - you'd be spending all your time collecting data
  • Similarly, for cases where frequent data collection is key, the CL3000 is the only feasible option
  • The data transfer is 10-20x faster with the CL3000 via WiFi, which is key for medium/heavy users
  • In setups where your CAN loggers need to be synced, the WiFi RTC Sync of the CL3000 is vital
  • If your CAN bus analyzer needs to be installed in a difficult-to-reach location, it's useful to be able to access it remotely
  • When you're logging data at client sites or in field studies, you don't want to be visiting to collect the data constantly
  • The possibility of automation (via the Push mode) makes the CL3000 completely scalable
  • The option of adding a USB 3G/4G hotspot means that you can access data even from very desolate locations

There are many other reasons for getting a CL3000, but we always recommend that you evaluate what your use case will be. You can of course always contact us if you want sparring.

With the CL3000 Push Mode it's easy to auto-transfer log files to the cloud. However, if you need a fully automated setup, these files will also need to be converted to human-readable values. Here, you can either set up custom scripts to handle this - or you can utilize CANvas' "auto convert" function. This allows you to set up a scheduled task to run e.g. every minute. The task can take any log files arriving on the server, convert them and e.g. append the output to an existing output file. This way you can create an accumulating database of your log file data.

The CL3000 wireless can logger does not have a built-in GPS functionality. However, if GPS is broadcasted onto the CAN bus (e.g. by a GPS-to-CAN device), the CL3000 will pick it up along with other data.

Yes. The CL3000 does not have this built-in, but instead comes with a WiFi module. This is done both from a cost and flexibility perspective. However, if you wish to connect the CL3000 via cellular, you can simply set up a nearby cellular hotspot and have the CL3000 connect to that. This is equally stable to a built-in solution. Further, you’re able to share a data plan across clusters of CL3000 - for example in warehouse applications or production machinery settings.

We offer a low cost unlocked 2G / 3G / 4G hotspot with options for both North America and Europe. If you need different regions / frequency bands, let us know.

Note: The CL3000 CAN analyzer can connect to any WiFi hotspot, incl. WLANs. Thus, a cellular hotspot is just an option - not a requirement - for bringing the CL3000 online.

No, the CL3000 has a 16 GB SD card and can work as a stand-alone logger without WiFi. For most CAN bus applications, 16 GB will provide many weeks - if not many months - of data capacity. Further, with cyclical logging, you can ensure you always keep the most recent data - should you encounter extreme scenarios where you run out of space.

When connectivity returns, the CL3000 can automatically start pushing the data to your server using Push Mode.

The CL3000 supports real-time streaming via USB to a PC (using a machine-friendly format or Wireshark). This is not possible per se via WiFi, though you can control the file split size and set it to e.g. 1 MB. With good, stable connectivity this will create a highly frequent transfer of log files (in some cases down to a minute) that can be processed on your server. In practice, this means that the CL3000 can provide near real-time streaming via WiFi - and in our experience, higher frequencies are very rarely needed for CAN bus to WiFi applications.

When the WiFi CAN logger CL3000 is in Station mode, you can access the web interface while on the same network. However, you can also port forward the CL3000 to bring it online. This will let you remotely access the web interface and download files on-demand via the internet. This is useful if you need to retrieve a small number of files on an ad hoc basis. However, a far simpler approach is to simply use the Push Mode and send all files to your server - here you can then select just the files you need.

We do offer 32 GB upgrades to the CL3000 on-demand as a customization - please contact us in that case. However, in contrast to the CL1000/2000, it’s not possible to replace the SD card of the CL3000 with your own custom SD card.
