About the J1939 adapter
The DB9-J1939 adapter cable is suited for use in most heavy duty vehicles - incl. trucks, transit buses, excavators, construction machinery and more. The cable is compatible with our CANedge CAN loggers and CANsub CAN interfaces - letting you connect either directly to the CAN bus.
Simply locate the 9-pin deutsch connector in your vehicle, typically found in the cabin (sometimes behind a panel).
Note: We offer various other heavy-duty adapter cables for more niche/OEM-specific use cases - see our cable overview.
Need to use this with a CANsub.4/CANmod.router? See our DB25-4xDB9 adapter cable.

Below are two use cases examples where the DB9-J1939 adapter is useful:
Heavy duty fleet telematics
Need to log J1939 data from a truck fleet?
In heavy duty vehicle fleets, the simplest way to record J1939 data with your CAN logger is to connect it directly to the CAN bus via a DB9-J1939 adapter. This way, you'll automatically start logging all broadcasted raw J1939 data from the vehicle - allowing you to e.g. set up telematics solutions in no time. The CANedge support optional 'silent mode' to ensure that the device does not affect the CAN bus.
Standalone data logging from transit buses
Need to log J1939 data from a vehicle - incl. on-request PGNs?
In some cases, you'll need to be able to both log broadcasted J1939 data - and request data from the CAN bus. Many J1939 parameters are only available on-request. The CANedge can send custom CAN messages when in direct connection to the CAN bus. The DB9-J1939 adapter enables this when 'silent mode' is disabled.
Wireless field diagnostics via CANsub
Need to give your field technicians easy access to the J1939 bus of heavy-duty vehicles?
Pair the DB9-J1939 adapter cable with a CANsub.2/CANsub.4 and a WiFi router on the machine. Field technicians with WiFi access can then open webCAN wirelessly in their browser (zero installation required) to stream and DBC decode J1939 data for in-field diagnostics. Combined with the standardized J1939 deutsch 9-pin connection, this gives you a plug & play setup for accessing the CAN bus across your heavy-duty fleet without having to send anyone into the cab.
The J1939 adapter fits the vast majority of heavy duty vehicles. However, cases exist where you'll need e.g. an OBD2-DB9 adapter or an alternative heavy-duty adapter. We encourage you always visually evaluate the vehicle in question. If in doubt, feel free to take a picture and contact us. If you need a cable not available on our site, please let us know as well.
