What problem did you solve?
At AgZen, we needed to efficiently collect and process real-time CAN data from a fleet of agricultural sprayers using J1939 and ISOBUS protocols. Our customers needed better insights into their sprayer operations, but accessing and interpreting the data directly from these systems was challenging due to the complexity of multiple CAN networks on modern agricultural equipment.
How did you solve it?
We integrated the CANmod.router to connect to the CAN networks on agricultural sprayers, serving as a CAN bus gateway. Specifically, we connected the secondary CAN buses of the CANmod.router to both the J1939 diagnostic bus and ISOBUS implement network. We then used the 'direct-mode' setup to route these CAN buses onto the primary CAN bus as a single CAN channel, adding CAN ID filters/prescalers to focus on critical parameters like spray rate, boom section status, and machine performance metrics. On our receiving CAN hardware, we implemented custom software to process specific ISOBUS messages to inform our optimization of spray coverage in real time on agricultural crops.

This integration has allowed us to provide farmers with detailed insights about their spraying operations, optimize chemical application rates and reduce waste. Our customers report improved efficiency and reduced environmental impact, while our applications team has more ability to diagnose issues remotely (even without field visits in many cases). Finally, our research team can develop new solutions that are more computationally efficient and precise.
