CAN Bus Interface + 5 x CAN Logging: CANmod.router [News]

news / 2024-06

The CANmod.router CAN bus interface lets you stream 4 x CAN FD via USB or route 4 isolated CAN buses onto 1 x CAN, turning a CANedge into a 5 x CAN data logger. Plus: CAN-USB streaming in SavvyCAN and Python and a Steelwrist construction telematics case study.

It's finally here!

The CANmod.router lets you receive/transmit CAN data (Classical or FD) from/to 4 isolated secondary CAN buses via 1 primary CAN bus (or USB).

The device can be used with a CANedge to log 5 x CAN - or as a 4 x CAN FD to USB interface with free software/API tools (more one these use cases below).

Key features include:

PLUG & PLAY: Connect up to 4 x CAN to receive / transmit the data via 1 x CAN (or USB) - no configuration required

COMPACT: 7 x 2 x 5 CM. 75G. 7 LEDs. Supply via DB9/USB. 5-26 V. Mounting flanges. USB for config/FW and streaming

PRO SPECS: 4 x CAN FD. Basic galvanic isolation. Silent mode. Zero data loss. 1 ms precision. Error frame support.

MUX MODE: Transport 4 x CAN via 1 x CAN. Easily demux data. Optionally transport via CAN FD for max throughput

SEAMLESS: Fully supported by CANedge/CANmod software/API tools. As if directly interfacing the 4 x CAN buses

CONFIGURABLE: Configure filters, prescalers, transmit lists, CAN IDs, bit rates and more via JSON config and GUI

The CANedge supports 2 x CAN by default - but what if you need more?

By adding a CANmod.router, you can now log 1 x CAN (CH1) + 4 x CAN (CH2) - or beyond via daisy chaining!

  • Power the CANmod.router via the CANedge 2nd port 5V
  • Maximize 4 x CAN throughput via CAN FD routing (mux-mode)
  • Easily demux routed data via MF4 converter or Python API
  • Control transmission on the 4 x CAN via CANedge
  • Use daisy chaining to log 1 + 8 x CAN, 1 + 12 x CAN, ..
  • Individually configure the 4 x CAN-S interfaces
  • Filters, prescalers, transmit lists, silent mode & more

On the product page, we provide detailed explanations on muxed/demuxed data - and how this is seamlessly integrated into your workflow. You'll also find MF4 sample data, showing you both the muxed, demuxed and DBC decoded results.

The CANmod.router also lets you interface the 4 x CAN buses via USB - making it possibly the best value/cost CAN-USB real-time streaming interface on the market.

  • Receive/transmit data from 4 x CAN FD via USB
  • Stream full busloads without frame loss
  • Power the CANmod.router via USB for easy installation
  • Stream raw / DBC decoded data in free SavvyCAN GUI
  • Develop any integration via free easy-to-use Python API
  • Example: Visualise decoded data in Grafana-MQTT dashboards

The CANmod.router has been 'an idea' for multiple years in our team - but the 'idea to final product' was done in ~6 months - an impressive feat by our development team!

It's in principle a simple product: It takes four isolated CAN buses and lets you output the combined data (muxed) onto a single CAN bus (or USB). However, the execution is quite elegant - leveraging ISO TP, CAN FD and muxing to enable a highly flexible and effective solution to transporting the CAN data.

A key result is that you can now record 5 x CAN (or beyond) with a single CANedge - rather than e.g. deploying 3 x CANedge units (as many of our users have done so far). This makes the CANedge a viable option for many new multi-CAN use cases - at drastically lower cost vs. alternatives.

In addition, the CANmod.router can be used as a 4 x CAN FD to USB interface - with free software/API tools. The device offers a great value/cost ratio in the CAN-USB space - similar to the role the CANedge plays in the CAN logging space.

We look forward to your deployments and feedback!
