What problem did you solve?
The main challenge we needed to solve using the logger was related to a project for a master's thesis. The goal was to design a system to track fire trucks and gather information about their condition. The collected data was to be integrated into an internal management system to enable remote diagnostics. This would help improve maintenance efficiency and ensure that the vehicles are always in optimal working condition.
How did you solve it?
We used the CANedge3 (incl. GPS/IMU) with the Super SIM to send the recorded data via cellular network to a self-hosted MinIO S3 storage system running on our infrastructure.
A custom Python script monitored uploads from the logger and DBC decoded/filtered the information from the compressed log files. The extracted information was stored temporarily as Parquet files, then written via REST to our PostgreSQL database backend [CSS provides script samples for this purpose]. Based on timestamps we also grouped the data by trips. Optimizations were also implemented, such as deleting the data from the S3 storage after successful transmission to the backend. The backend then provided the data to the management system, accessible via both a web interface and a mobile app via REST.

What benefit has this led to?
The project resulted in a successful master's thesis, leading to a successful graduation. In addition, the foundation was established for technically enabling the tracking of fire trucks. This provides added value to our customers in the future and also serves as an additional selling point for our existing software. Overall, the CANedge3 provided us with a flexible and easy way to expand our software without requiring advanced knowledge, thanks to the many tutorials from CSS Electronics
