About the J1939-DB9 Adapter Cable
What can you use it for? The J1939-DB9 adapter cable is suited for use in most heavy duty vehicles - incl. trucks, transit buses, excavators, construction machinery and more. The cable lets you connect your CLX000 CAN logger directly to the CAN bus with ease.
How to install it? You simply locate the J1939 9-pin connector in your heavy duty vehicle. Typically this will be directly visible in your cabin - though in some cases, you'll need to move a panel or unscrew a protection plate to reveal it.
Converting J1939 raw data
When you've recorded raw J1939 data, you'll want to convert it to human-readable form. To do so, you can use our free CANvas software and the built-in FMS database to get started. This provides you with a small set of J1939 parameter conversion rules.
If you need a more extensive database covering more J1939 data parameters, we also offer a low cost J1939 DBC file. If in doubt, contact us.

When Do You Need the J1939-DB9 Adapter?
Below are two use cases examples where the J1939-DB9 adapter is useful:
Heavy Duty Fleet Telematics
Need to log J1939 data from a truck fleet?
In heavy duty vehicle fleets, the simplest way to record J1939 data with your CLX000 is to connect it directly to the CAN bus via a J1939-DB9 adapter. This way, you'll automatically start logging all broadcasted raw J1939 data from the vehicle - allowing you to e.g. set up telematics solutions in no time. The CLX000 supports Silent Mode configuration, ensuring the CLX000 does not affect the vehicle CAN bus in any way.
Transit Bus Standalone Data Logging
Need to log J1939 data from a vehicle - incl. on-request PGNs?
In some cases, you'll need to be able to both log broadcasted J1939 data - but also send periodic request messages to the CAN bus. In particular, many J1939 data parameters are only available when triggered by the right request message. The CLX000 is able to send up to 20 custom CAN messages when it has a direct connection to the CAN bus. The J1939-DB9 adapter enables this when you prefer not to use the logger in Silent Mode.

The J1939 adapter fits the vast majority of heavy duty vehicles. However, cases exist where you'll need e.g. an OBD2-DB9 adapter or an alternative heavy-duty adapter. We encourage you always visually evaluate the vehicle in question. If in doubt, feel free to take a picture and contact us. If you need a cable not available on our site, please let us know as well.
