About the CANedge IP67 enclosure

The CANedge is often deployed in harsh environments in e.g. mining, construction, farming or maritime deployments. In such cases we strongly recommend to install the CANedge in this IP67 enclosure to make it 100% dust/water resistant.

The IP67 enclosure is tailored to the CANedge, enabling a plug & play installation, light weight of 200G and compact form factor of 125 x 110 x 35 mm. The IP67 enclosure features an end plate with a mounting PCB for the CANedge including 2 x DB9 connectors for direct insertion and exposes 2 x SMA connectors for optionally connecting WiFi/LTE/GPS antennas.

The design lets you easily extract/insert the end plate and CANedge as 'one unit', e.g. for SD card extraction in the field.

How to install

To install your CANedge follow below steps:

  1. Mate the CANedge with the IP67 PCB DB9 connectors
  2. Mount the CANedge flanges to the PCB via the 4 x M3 screws
  3. Connect the 2 x SMA cables to the CANedge (if relevant)
  4. Verify that the device powers on and records data
  5. Insert the IP67 end plate + CANedge into the enclosure
  6. Firmly close the end plate to the enclosure
  7. Mount the IP67 enclosure using the M6 bolts

If your CANedge has 0-1 SMA connectors (e.g. CANedge1 devices), you can optionally replace the default SMA cables in the IP67 enclosure with the included IP67 SMA plugs.

When the CANedge is installed within the IP67 enclosure you can not leverage the LEDs to monitor the device status unless you extract the device again. We therefore recommend to leverage the alternative status monitoring methods:

  • CAN heartbeat: You can configure the device to output a heartbeat CAN message on CAN1/CAN2 with details on the device logging state, RTC timestamp and SD storage left, enabling you to monitor the status via e.g. a CAN interface/display
  • S3 heartbeat: For CANedge2/CANedge3 devices, the device will periodically upload the device JSON file to S3, enabling you to continuously monitor the status via tools like CANcloud

To open the enclosure, we recommend using a small tool to carefully push down the snap-fit plastic flanges of the end plate. You may need to iteratively do so on each side until you can remove the end plate by hand. Make sure to only open the enclosure in suitable environments.

Ready-to-use adapters/antennas

The IP67 enclosure provides a DTM06-12SA IP67 connector that exposes all relevant pins from the 2 x DB9 connectors of the CANedge (see the tech specs tab for the pinout).

You can create your own DTM06-12SA wiring harness using our DTM06-12SA connector kit (or your own) - or you can use our DTM06-12SA-DB9/DB9 adapter cable for plug & play installation. The latter option is convenient as it allows you to directly use all of our existing DB9 adapter cables (just as if you were connecting to the CANedge directly). However, the DB9 connectors of this adapter cable are not IP67. As such, the adapter is useful if you deploy in an area with dust, but without excessive humidity / water exposure (to avoid corrosion).

You can use any of our existing SMA antennas for the CANedge with the IP67 enclosure. For deployments of the CANedge3 in areas with high humidity or water exposure, we recommend to use our IP67 MEA-LGG-AM antenna.

Below are some examples where the CANedge IP67 enclosure can be useful:

CANedge IP67 enclosure mining

Harsh environment vehicle deployments

Need to install the CANedge in a fleet of heavy-duty vehicles?

When deploying the CANedge in e.g. vehicles as an offline blackbox or telematics device, the integrity and longevity of the device is critical. Heavy-duty vehicles often operate in harsh environments (construction, mining, farming) with high dust, mud, humidity and water exposure. Here, the IP67 enclosure offers a simple way of protecting the CANedge from the environment - at low cost and swift installation. For use cases that only require dust protection you can use the DTM06-12SA-DB9/DB9 adapter to leverage our existing DB9 adapter cables (e.g. DB9-J1939). For long-term installations with water/humidity exposure, we recommend building a fully IP67 adapter using our DTM06-12SA connector kit.

Maritime data logging

Need to log NMEA 2000 data from boats/ships?

In any maritime deployment of the CANedge, it is vital to install it within an IP67 enclosure - both to avoid direct water exposure, but also to protect the SD card and connectors from erosion over time from the humidity exposure. Here we recommend to use the IP67 enclosure combined with e.g our DTM06-12SA connector kit to create a suitable IP67 adapter cable.

Yes, for larger orders we can offer to prepare your CANedge inside the IP67 enclosure and ship it as such. For this type of deployment, we normally recommend to also prepare a custom Configuration File for the CANedge to ensure you can deploy the unit directly after receipt. Contact us for details on e.g. the minimum order quantity (MOQ).

We currently offer several variants of the CANedge, incl. optional WiFi, LTE and GPS. Offering each variant in an optional IP67 version would result in prohibitively expensive end user costs. Alternatively, we would have to make IP67 the 'only option' available for each CANedge unit - but that would increase the default base cost, size and weight by a substantial amount.

We believe that 10-30% of CANedge deployments would required an IP67 enclosure - and therefore we have take the modular approach of offering a customized, plug & play option for those deployments. This also enables users to start without the IP67 enclosure for initial testing - and later add it as required, even on a case-by-case basis.
