SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) is Switzerland's national railway company, operating passenger and freight rail services across the country and internationally.
What problem did you solve?
We operate a fleet of small shunting locomotives on which we need to create usage profiles. Further, we needed to optimise maintenance intervals for future fleets.
How did you solve it?
We deploy the CANedge3 CAN bus data loggers with LTE in our existing fleet of locomotives to record operational parameters as well as GPS location, operating times and more. We currently analyze the incoming data manually on an ad hoc basis. Further, we leverage the data to carry out remote diagnostics and troubleshooting in the event of malfunctions. This helps us decide in advance whether the vehicle must be repaired in the workshop or if it can be repaired in the field.

What benefit has this led to?
While the project is still in an early stage, the CANedge helps us reduce costs and improve availability. Further, the ambition is to introduce condition-related maintenance intervals by leveraging the incoming CAN bus data.
