J1939 Telematics: Engine Duty Cycle Analysis in MATLAB
Case Studies / Danfoss
Danfoss Digital Displacement
Danfoss Dextreme technology is a game changing innovation for excavator operators. Using radial piston pumps with ultra-fast mechatronic valves controlled by an embedded computer, our products are highly controllable and efficient, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and increased productivity for operators.
What problem did you solve?
We needed to obtain engine duty cycle and location data from a large excavator (CAT336F) operating in a quarry, with minimal expense and disruption to the quarry caused by equipment setup.
How did you solve it?
We connected the CANedge3 to the excavator's diagnostic port and used the CANedge3 GPS antenna for the position data. After a short test to make sure the data was logging, we left the CANedge3 on the excavator for 2 days, logging to the SD card. The CAN data was processed using the J1939 DBC file purchased from CSS, allowing us to extract the key engine signals, engine speed and torque. From this data we were able to calculate an average operating power over the test period using MATLAB.
"The CANedge3 is an effective and inexpensive tool for off-highway vehicle field test monitoring"
What benefit has this led to?
Using the average power result, we were able to estimate the run-time for an equivalent battery-electric excavator, which we intend to demonstrate in the same quarry application. During the electric excavator test, we will reuse the CANedge3 with LTE upload to AWS S3, to remotely monitor the prototype machine.
Why did you choose the CANedge3?
Following successful use of the CANedge2 with WiFi in previous projects, we were excited to use the CANedge3 and take advantage of the built-in LTE and GPS features. Generally, the CANedge is an ideal solution for use cases where regular telematics tools lack the sufficient data rate/content - and more advanced data acquisition is impractical for long-term testing and/or too expensive.
