CAN Bus Diagnostics [EV Blackbox Data Logger]
Case Studies / Jaunt Motors
Jaunt Motors
Jaunt Motors is an Australian EV design company specializing in custom electric vehicle conversions for classic vehicles including Land Rovers, Minis, and Porsches.
What problem did you solve?
We needed a reliable, high-resolution data logging solution for testing, validating, and diagnosing our EV platforms, as well as monitoring the real-world performance of vehicles leaving the factory - particularly within battery management systems and vehicle control units. Existing tools for CAN bus diagnostics required a live connection from the vehicle to a laptop as well as a knowledgeable operator, lacked long-term recording, and made it difficult to capture intermittent faults during extended operation.
How did you solve it?
We integrated the CANedge1 into the vehicle's CAN bus to capture data during both validation and in-field operation. Its compact, standalone design and SD card storage enabled continuous multi-day logging without live tethering or human supervision.
Using DBC decoding and cloud tools like Dropbox and Google Drive, our engineers can remotely access data and monitor vehicle performance in near real time, even for vehicles deployed interstate.
"The CANedge1 has transformed how we collect and analyse data during EV validation - and the open source ecosystem and excellent documentation have made integration and diagnostics seamless"
What benefit has this led to?
The CANedge1 has streamlined both in-house validation and post-delivery fleet monitoring. We can now verify real-world vehicle behaviour, detect intermittent issues, and validate performance remotely. This has reduced on-site engineering time, improved reliability, and provided valuable insight into long-term vehicle performance and usage patterns.
Why did you choose the CANedge?
Unlike proprietary OEM loggers, the CANedge stores raw MDF4 files that can be directly decoded and analyzed in license-free tools like asammdf or Python scripts. Its dual-channel capability, industrial-grade design, and flexible configuration options made it ideal for use across a variety of EV architectures for CAN bus diagnostics. The documentation available on the CSS website as well the YouTube channel have also been outstanding learning resources.
