EV Trailer Telematics - J1939 Data to AWS S3 via WiFi/LTE
Case Studies / Range Energy

Range Energy
Range Energy accelerates the electrification of commercial transportation via powered trailers for the heavy-duty truck market.
What problem did you solve?
We required a solution for logging CAN messages on our buses without any user interaction or host computer. Specifically, we use CANedge devices in Class 8 tractors for J1939 telematics and fuel consumption evaluation, as well as in our electric trailer (our product) for engineering diagnostics purposes.
How did you solve it?
The CANedge has the flexibility to log all messages on an SD card - as well as remotely upload the data to our AWS S3 bucket via WiFi or cellular service. This allowed us to create a data pipeline and automate our processes, using script examples from CSS to build Grafana-Timescale integration for dashboard visualization [CSS: We now recommend using Grafana-Athena].
"The CANedge3 is the smoothest way to get vehicle data to the engineers that want it - and the documentation is great too!"

What benefit has this led to?
The CANedge has allowed us to post process data after our test drives as well as upload logs to our S3 server without much user interaction.
Why did you choose the CANedge3?
The CANedge seemed user-friendly and easy to work with.
