ABOUT THE CELLULAR USB WIFI ROUTER
This cellular WiFi router adds tons of flexibility to your CL3000 WiFi CAN logger!
With this hotspot and the CL3000’s ability to push data to your cloud server, you’ll have direct access to your data at all times - even for vehicles on the road.
Simply add a nano SIM card and power the hotspot via USB - either directly in modern vehicles or via an adaptor for your vehicle's cigarette lighter receptacle.
We offer two variants configured for 2G / 3G / 4G:
One for USA/Canada and one for Europe (see Tech Specs).
Note: You can definitely also use any other cellular USB router. We primarily offer one for the convenience of our users.
Below we outline typical use cases - as well as a guide on how to get started.
When Do You Need a 3G / 4G WiFi Hotspot?
The CL3000 lets you record data from practically any vehicle - and many other CAN bus applications.
Further, by connecting to a local WiFi hotspot, the CL3000 can auto-transfer the log files via Push Mode to your cloud.
However, sometimes a local WLAN WiFi hotspot is too restricted - e.g. in below cases:
For vehicle fleet management you'll typically want a regular stream of data to be able to take action based on recent insights. By using this 3G / 4G hotspot, you can e.g. send 1 MB data chunks from your fleet of vehicles to your server with high frequency - allowing for more rapid decision making.
Further, with the CL3000's massive 16 GB storage, you'll never have to worry about loosing data. If a vehicle enters an area with no connectivity, the CAN data is simply transferred once the cellular hotspot gets online again.
Vehicle Field Testing:
In vehicle field testing, data frequency may not be vital - but you’ll still want your data collected on a regular basis to learn and adapt. At the same time, vehicles may not return to a fixed WLAN position for months - and collecting the data manually is not an option.
Here, the cellular hotspot is a low cost and practical solution that shortens your time-to-data. It allows you to draw conclusions during field tests, rather than after. Further, the small size means it’s not a nuisance for the drivers.
Remote Machinery Monitoring:
If you’re a production machinery OEM, you’ll want to be able to predict breakdowns at client sites - and ideally conduct remote troubleshooting to quickly resolve any issues. Here the CL3000 is a great solution.
However you may not always be able to leverage your client’s local WLAN. Further, if a local site changes their WLAN SSID or password, your CL3000 will be unable to connect. Here, a cellular hotspot may be a better solution as you maintain 100% control over the data transfer.
Some CAN based equipment may be stationary or in a constrained space - yet with no local WLAN available. In these cases, the only solution to transfer data on a regular basis is to use a cellular hotspot. Examples include power grids, charging stations, construction sites and more.
HOW TO USE THE CELLULAR HOTSPOT WITH YOUR CL3000
Below we briefly outline how to use the cellular hotspot:
- Insert your nano SIM card into the small slot in the USB stick
- Connect to the hotspots SSID (cf. stick backside) with pass 12345678
- Access settings by entering 192.168.0.1 in your browser (user/pass = admin/admin)
- Change the SSID name & pass under Settings/WLAN/WLAN Basic Settings
- Add your SSID name and pass in your CL3000's CONFIG.INI file (e.g. via CANvas)
- Test that the CL3000 is able to connect to the hotspot and your FTP server
We do encourage you to evaluate the connectivity in the areas which you intend to log data from before scaling up your setup.
