Below is our 'rule of thumb' guidance:

  • CL1000: If you only need to stream data via USB (or log data without absolute date & time stamping)
  • CL2000: If you need to both stream data via USB and log timestamped data to an SD card
  • CANedge1: If you only need to log timestamped data to an SD card
  • CANedge2: If you need to log data to an SD card and transfer it via a WiFi access point to your own server
  • CANedge3: If you need to log data to an SD card and transfer it via 3G/4G LTE to your own server

Overall, the CANedge (and related software) is far superior for SD logging - and we strongly recommend this, unless you explicitly require USB streaming. If you need to collect data frequently/automatically/remotely, see the CANedge2/CANedge3.

Is it a good fit? If you need to convert data from agricultural machinery, this is a great starting point. Decode car data 
 i  What is it? The majority of cars since 2007 support a set of standard OBD2 PIDs (Parameter IDs). Using e.g. a CANedge, you can request OBD2 PIDs (e.g. Vehicle Speed or Fuel Rate) and log the resonses. To decode this data, this free OBD2 DBC database can be used within the free open source asammdf GUI/API for use with the CANedge series.

Is it a good fit? If you're going to record OBD2 data using the CANedge, this database lets you easily decode the data via asammdf. You can of course also use the DBC as input for your own custom data processing scripts.

Is it a good fit? In some heavy-duty vehicles, no 9-pin deutsch connector is available for accessing the detailed J1939 data. Here, this adapter can be an alternative way of accessing the J1939 data for heavy-duty vehicles in which the OBD2 pins 3 and 11 provide access to the J1939 data as a secondary CAN bus.

 i  What is it? This lets you log CAN data directly from the CAN H/L wires via contactless induction. This means you do not have to cut the cables. In this setup, the DB9/DC adapter lets you easily add an external power source (e.g. a vehicle battery or cigarette outlet). It replaces the our CANCrocodile CH1 adapter cable (which is no longer kept in stock) and offers similar functionality, but with a more compact connector head. Supports 5K to 1000K bit rates.

Is it a good fit? This is often used when a CAN bus connector is not directly available in the vehicle/machine. This can e.g. be the case in vehicle fleets where the connectors must be kept free for diagnostic purposes.

Is it a good fit? In most use cases, a CAN logger is simply powered via the CAN bus connector directly (e.g. via OBD2/J1939 adapter cables). However, when e.g. using the CANCrocodile as the data parser, you'll need a separate power source. Here, the cigarette outlet is a very convenient source, in particular for temporary/pilot installations

Is it a good fit? This is useful when you e.g. need to install the CANedge2/CANedge3 behind metal panels or other connectivity-blocking factors. By extending the antenna by up to 3 meters, you can move it to a non-shielded position for improved connectivity - and e.g. ensure line-of-sight to a WiFi access point for WiFi antennas, or to the sky for cellular antennas. For the CANedge2/CANedge3 (incl. GNSS/IMU), this extension cable can be used together with the GPS antenna, allowing you to position the WiFi or 3G/4G antenna separately from the GPS antenna.

Is it a good fit? If you need to transfer data from a CANedge2 via 4G LTE, this is a simple solution. However, we strongly recommend you consider the CANedge3 with built-in 4G LTE support
