EV Motorcycle Diagnostics via WiFi/Cellular CAN Data Logger
Case Studies / Scorpio Electric

What problem did you solve?
We needed an accurate log of all the CAN data broadcast on the CAN bus of our prototype vehicle. Specifically, we needed this from both the benchtop, as well as remotely when the vehicle was running on a track.
The purpose is to enable quick prototype diagnostics, to see if everything is working as it should. This involves monitoring the CAN parameters - especially those that send error/warning flags.
How did you solve it?
The CANedge2 met our requirements to log all CAN data that was being broadcast on the bus. In addition, it was able to upload the data wirelessly via WiFi to an S3 server - where we could then download and analyse the data from a different location. For automation purposes, we set up a simple script application to take a list of MF4 log files and convert them to PEAK's TRC format (via the CSS Electronics MF4 converters). After this, the application would concatenate the TRC log files via a PEAK tool. The resulting file could be easily analyzed via PCAN-Explorer.
"The CANedge2 is a reliable and easy-to-use CAN logger - it does its job as described!"
We use the logger a lot on a test bench in our office where a stationary WiFi router is available. Here, the CANedge2 is constantly connected and thus uploads the MF4 logs to our S3 server as soon as they are ready on the SD card. When the CANedge2 is on the bike we deploy it with a 4G WiFi router, which allows the device to upload log files to our S3 server continuously while on-the-road.
With this setup, the CAnedge2 serves as a 'vehicle black box' for situations where things do not work as we expect them to. As we progress, we will also be looking at using the CANedge2 for optimization and benchmarking of our vehicles.
What benefit has this led to?
It has given us a convenient all in one device which met our requirements for CAN data logging.
Why did you choose the CANedge2?
The small physical footprint, the ease of use, and the ability to upload the recorded data wirelessly.
